ADK Outings Committee

Volunteer Opportunities

The Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) Outings Committee seeks volunteers in two areas:   Committee Members and Trip Leaders.

The Outings Committee is a standing committee of ADK.  Its purpose is to sponsor and lead  outdoor recreational opportunities for ADK members.  It is responsible for Club-wide trips.  It has no responsibility for local chapter activities. Each year the Committee sponsors 4 Seasonal Outings in New York State and 15-25 Adventure Travel trips which may go almost anywhere in the world.

The Committee is responsible for the following tasks: Evaluate proposals for trips from prospective leaders; recruit new trip leaders; evaluate feedback from trip participants and leaders following the completion of trips; coordinate publicity for trips; produce standards for administering and leading trips; respond to problems; insure fiscal soundness of trip budgets; and monitor leader performance.  Committee members should have an awareness of and interest in international recreational travel.  The skills required are administrative and communicative.  Committee members must be members of ADK.  They are not required to lead trips, but many do volunteer in this way.

ADK Adventure Travel trips go to all corners of the globe.  We have traveled extensively in North America and Europe and visited all continents except Antarctic.  Our trips target the active member and may entail hiking, backpacking, walking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, rafting or skiing. Many trips also include a cultural or educational theme. We do not encourage passive travel such as bus, rail or cruise journeys. Our major goals are to provide physical activity in an interesting and safe setting to a group of ADK members, and to develop a cadre of experienced trip leaders for ADK so that we can offer even more diverse travel opportunities to our members.

We are looking for leaders who have the organizational skills necessary to put a trip together, the social skills necessary to keep a group of diverse people contented, and the skills to handle emergency situations in an appropriate manner.

Seasonal Outings are usually Club-wide weekend social events with outdoor recreation - hiking, canoeing, bicycling, skiing, snowshoeing, etc. - as the major activity.  Each Seasonal Outing requires an overall chairman, supported by activities coordinators, registrars, publicity people, etc. We seek people for all these roles.

Our leaders must be volunteers who are ADK members.

If you are interested in either one or both of these volunteer opportunities, please contact the Outings Committee chairman:

Thank you for your interest in ADK Outings Committee Volunteer Opportunities.  We hope to hear from you.
