Recreation
is a
principal focus of ADK. It is experienced
locally through
the many outings sponsored and led each week by ADK's
chapters. Outings are also sponsored at the Club level where all
ADKers
can participate regardless of chapter affiliation. They are open to
Members-at-Large
as well.
These "All Club" outings have brought together ADKers from widely scattered locations to share in an outdoor activity of common interest. Whether it be hiking, canoeing, skiing, bicycling, or something else, it is usually muscle-powered. From this shared experience have come life-long friendships that might not otherwise have occurred. All Club outings are divided into two categories: Seasonal Outings and Adventure Travel. The four Seasonal Outings: Winter, Spring, Canoe (Summer), and Fall are weekend events (Canoe is the exception) to which members and non-members alike are invited. Each is associated with a different area of New York State - Winter Outing on the Tug Hill plateau, Spring Outing in the Catskills, Canoe Outing in the St. Regis Canoe Area, and Fall Outing in the Adirondacks. Scheduled day trips with volunteer ADK leaders are the focus of each Seasonal Outing. All also provide opportunity for socializing over meals and shared accommodations. The oldest of these, Fall Outing, has been occurring for more than 50 years. Adventure Travel trips are longer and more widely scattered. They are a minimum of 5 days in length and have lasted more than 2 1/2 weeks. To date, 6 of the 7 continents have been visited by an ADK Adventure Travel trip. We have cycled in Spain, canoed in Canada and Florida, x-country skied in Norway, gone on safari in Africa and hiked in Patagonia, New Zealand, Nepal and in numerous places in Europe and North America. Led by volunteer ADK leaders, frequently with the assistance of professional guides and tour operators, these trips emphasize our shared ADK values - respect for the land through enlightened techniques and respect for each other through a shared sense of community and responsible behavior. Our trip size is small, usually between 10 and 20 participants. Approximately 20 Adventure Travel trips are currently scheduled each year. ADK membership is required for participation in an Adventure Travel trip. The current schedule of Seasonal Outings and Adventure Travel can be reached by using the menu bar at the top of the page. Specific trip details are available by clicking specific outings and the individual trip leaders can be contacted via email. For a leader profile, click on the leaders name. Pictures of outings will be included when available. Pictures and stories from previous Seasonal Outings and Adventure Travel trips can be viewed by clicking on one of the links below. If you think you'd like to get involved, click on Volunteer Opportunities. And finally, if you'd like to go somewhere we have not offered this year or with a specific leader, click on Dreams and tell us about it. Happy Wandering |
