   ADK Leader Profiles: Donald Urmston
urmston2
My outdoor adventuring began when my brother asked me to go backpacking with him in the Catskills. Once I tried hiking I really fell in love with the outdoors.

A few years later, I tried kayaking and found another new passion. Over the years, I led many hiking, kayaking and backpacking trips for family and friends.  In 2005, I joined the ADK so I could meet more people who shared my love of the outdoors. On a 7-day canoe trip in Algonquin Provincial Park, the trip leader told me that I would make a good trip leader. So I started leading chapter outings. I soon got the reputation as the kayaking nut in the chapter and most of my chapter trips are paddling excursions though I also lead hikes too.

I got involved as an Adventure Travel leader because I wanted to bring my trips to a wider audience. I love planning trips and sharing the adventure with like-minded travelers. In the past, I have led hiking trips in the Catskills and Paddling trips on the Hudson and Delaware Rivers. In 2008 I am leading a paddling / walking tour on the Erie Canal (chapter trip) and in 2009 I am planning a 7-day sea-kayaking trip in Maine (Adventure Travel Trip).

As a participant in other trips or on my own I have paddled coastal Maine, Nova Scotia, Algonquin Provincial Park, the Delaware River and the Great Hudson River Paddle – from Albany to Manhattan. I hike frequently in the Catskills and around Orange and Ulster counties. My travels throughout my lifetime have taken me to more than 30 states, Mexico, Canada, Italy, Germany and Belgium. I also enjoy cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, and biking
