Mountains & hiking have thrilled me as long as I can remember. This
may come from my Scandinavian ancestry & summers in northern
Minnesota spent on a mountain river near a logging camp. When my family
moved east & I first saw the Adirondacks, their boreal forests felt
immediately like home. From then on I made many high-peak backpacking
and hiking trips with my children and friends.
At age 46 I decided to complete the ADK 46 peaks to see more of the ADK
region. I've sought out heights and long distance paths whenever
I’ve been in other parts of the world: England's Lake District and
Cornwall; France's Maritime Alps and their Valley of the Marvels; Mont
Blanc and the Dolomites in Italy; Hong Kong's long distance trail; the
Austrian Alps, the Cascades; Spain's Pyrenees, etc.
I like leading ADK travel adventure trips – and taking them too-- for
two key reasons: they prompt/inspire me to take longer-than-usual treks
and they introduce me to people who share my interests in adventure and
stunning topography. When ADK's Norway outings needed a leader some
years ago, it seemed natural for me to start organizing hikes in a
beautiful country that I had previously seen mostly by bus and boat. As
a trip leader, I try to plan a hike that explores especially scenic
parts of the country, allows a range of paces to accommodate a group,
and offers interesting variety. After all, I expect to enjoy the hike
as much as I want others to enjoy it.
Running has been my regular exercise for over 30 years: I can do it
anywhere, anytime. I like seeing the world; sailing our small O’Day and
canoeing with my husband, Tom; x-country skiing; mucking about in
gardens; cooking & baking; reading; biking; and any time we can get
with our 3 children and 3 grandchildren.
