   ADK Leader Profiles: Dick Ernenwein
maryMeet Mary Krueger…..

My husband, Frank, and I are originally from Maryland. I am a former social studies teacher and school guidance counselor and Frank is a retired Washington lawyer. We moved full time to our vacation home in the Adirondacks near Jay and Whiteface Mountain in the summer of 2001.

We started coming to the Adirondacks in the late 1980’s, first to ski and then also to hike in the summer and fall. We joined ADK in 1988 and have both been active in the club since then. We were members-at-large until we moved to the Adirondacks and are now members of the Northwoods chapter. I was chairperson for ADK’s Fall Outing a few years ago, and am presently on the Fall Outing 2008 committee. I have enjoyed volunteering at the Nature Museum at Heart Lake during the last few summers. I have served on ADK’s Education Committee and am a new member of the Outings Committee.

My interest in leading trips started when we took an ADK trip to Austria in 2003 and an ADK trip to Ireland in 2006. I love to travel and enjoy planning and making arrangements for trips. I have planned and coordinated family trips to Europe, South America, and throughout the U.S. I thought it would be fun and interesting to become a trip leader and share with others my love and enjoyment of some of the places we have traveled to over the years.  We have traveled throughout the U.S. and have visited and hiked in most of our National Parks. My favorites include: Glacier, Yellowstone, Yosemite, North Cascades, Grand Canyon, Zion, Olympic, Mt. Rainier, Grand Teton, Badlands, Shenandoah, Smokey Mountain, and Crater Lake. We have also hiked in the Andes of South America and in the Austrian and Swiss Alps, and have visited many of the Provincial Parks in Canada. We have hiked in the Rockies, the Sierra’s, the Cascades, the North Cascades, the Chirricahua’s in Arizona, and the Appalachians, including the White Mountains of New Hampshire and Katahdin in Maine. I have enjoyed leading day hikes and cross country ski day trips for the hiking group I belong to. I have hiked many of the Adirondack High Peaks, some several times. I do only the ones with beautiful views, so I am not a 46er, although my husband is. My favorites are: Gothics, Algonquin, Colden, Marcy, Wright, Giant, and Cascade. I also enjoy many of the “gentler” hikes in areas of the Adirondacks, some of my favorites being Owl Head Lookout near Elizabethtown, the West River Trail to Lower Ausable Lake, The Crows,  the Jay Range, Hurricane Mountain, Saint Regis Mountain, Cooper Kiln Pond, Marcy Dam, and Silver Lake Mountain and bog. These are places where we often take guests who are visiting.

As a leader, I like to lead moderate to somewhat strenuous hikes with an educational/interpretive focus, learning about and appreciating the flora and fauna, geology, and natural and cultural history of the areas in which we are hiking. I like to keep a steady, but fairly relaxed pace that allows time for things like enjoyment of views, and photography. I have been to Glacier National Park three times and have enjoyed wonderful hikes and sightseeing each time. I look forward to going back again and sharing this spectacularly beautiful park with other ADK members.

Some of my other interests include our two grown sons, one in Delaware and one in Oregon, and a grandson and granddaughter; Nordic and Alpine skiing, canoeing, sailing, camping, backpacking, music (piano and chorus), reading, history, and environmental conservation. One of my favorite moments was when our grandson, then 4 years old, asked me, “Next time we go to your house, Grandma, can we take a hike?”
