   ADK Leader Profiles: Mike Barnard
mike
Mike's heart centers around the outdoors.  He is living and working toward his dream of a self-sustaining life style. With a homestead of chickens, goats, dogs, cats, a huge organic garden and various young people Mike is as busy in his time off as his time on.

A woodworker by trade and a photographer by training, outdoor adventures are just an extension of his life.  He carries a huge pack filled with chunks of wood he finds on his adventures for a "someday I will turn it into a bowl" project.  His 180-degree camera that weighs 20 lbs has been strapped to his back and carried into the most remote of places.

His outdoor pursuits have involved bicycling in Europe, trekking in the Himalayas and over 12 adventures in the Arctic to name a few.  He has a particular affinity for the Arctic and remote places.  His home is adorned with whalebones, moose antlers and caribou antlers from his adventures. The wilder the place, the happier Mike is.

Mike has been working with Pack Paddle Ski for close to 20 years on adventures on the top of the Knife Edge in Maine in winter to many hours on rivers all over this hemisphere. He has a knack for solving difficult logistics such as the time he siphoned gas out of cars stranded on the haul road north of the Arctic Circle to help the group return to their finish destination on time. This was in spite of the closed road due to lack of fuel shipments that week. His love of the outdoors is shown time and again such as the time he sat all night in the midst of the Arctic mosquitoes watching the 24 wolf pups behind the camp.  Join Mike to find the intricacy and essence of the nature of the place you are traveling in.
