2012 TRIP.Introduction In the 1970’s, Alfred Wainwright cobbled together an epic walk all the way across northern England, about 192 miles from the Irish Sea to the North Sea. Along the way the route passes through the Lake District National Park, The Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the North York Moors National Park. This walk has become one of the premiere long distance trips in the world. Come join veteran leader Jack Finnegan, his wife Shelley, and co-leader Gretchen Yealy as we wend our way across England. We start by dipping our boots in the Irish Sea and heading northward along the bluffs. We then turn eastward and wind up and down the “fells” of the beautiful Lake District, then across the flatter midsection of the country. We’ll take a day to rest in the lovely market town of Richmond. Into the hills we go again as we traverse the moors of Yorkshire and catch our first enticing glimpses of the North Sea. May is the perfect month to go, as we will see many wildflowers and ground-nesting birds. We’ll enjoy cool breezy days. Of course, cool and breezy may suddenly turn into driving horizontal rain or pelting hail—but then maybe we’ll see a rainbow or two! It’s lambing season and one of the greatest delights is watching the curious little ones staring at us from behind their wooly mothers. The varied greens of the landscape flow by at an easy pace in this part of the world where the ancient rhythms of seedtime and harvest, sun and overcast, and morning and evening still hold sway. ![]() Daily Itinerary Outing Cost The cost will be $2475.00 per participant. Payment
PolicyA deposit of $600.00 is due at the time of registration. The remaining balance of $1875.00 is due no later than February 1, 2011. Cancellation Policy If you need to cancel the trip at any time, an $85.00 ADK registration fee is non-refundable. The balance of the deposit is fully refundable up to February 1, 2011. After February 1, 2011, no refunds are possible unless your space can be filled from a waiting list. However, if ADK cancels the trip or if in the opinion of the leader, this trip is not for you, the full amount will be refunded. Accommodations All nights will be in bed & breakfast facilities or small inns. All have private bath (called “en suite” in England). Group size is limited to 14 total. Special Note This excursion is intended for experienced walkers in good physical condition. The estimated hiking distance is 192 miles, approximately 6-15 miles per day. The elevation gains and losses are relatively modest compared to Adirondack or Alpine treks, but the footing is quite varied and can be very muddy and rough. There are numerous stiles and gates, and several extended sections on paved surfaces. The pub or restaurant where we have our dinner may be a distance from our lodging, so even when the day’s route is complete there may be more walking to do! Route finding can be very challenging on this trip. Detailed “strip” maps will be provided by Packhorse, our luggage service. The leaders will have several different guidebooks and they have all done the route before. Nonetheless, participants should be prepared to “roll with the punches”! As with all outdoor activities, the weather will play a large role in our choice of route each day. Included in this cost will be:
