Itinerary

On any given day the itinerary may vary slightly due to weather, snow pack, and trail
conditions, especially at higher elevations, or group strength.

Daily Plan: breakfast, 8-9:00 hikes depart, bag lunch on trail, 4-5:00 return to OPI, dinner, evening program or free time

Day 1, Sunday June 28, 2010
Arrive before 1:00pm at SeaTac Airport, Seattle, WA.  This may mean arrival a day early and airport hotel on the 27th. Meet group at 1 pm on the 28th and take chartered shuttle (3.5 hr.) to Olympic Peninsula Institute (OPI). Dinner, orientation and orientation to the area and potential hikes.

Day 2, Monday June 29, 2010
Sol Duc Valley- (3/4 hr ride) Hike up to Deer Lake and the Seven Lakes Basin region/meadows via Sol Duc Falls. Lunch in meadows near a small tarn (glacial lake). Observe alpine wildflowers. 5-8 miles RT, gain 1460’

Day 3, Tuesday June 30, 2010
Hike Klahhane Ridge to the saddle of Mount Angeles (6000’) for rewarding views of The Straits of San Juan de Fuca, Vancouver Island and Mt Baker to the north and glaciers of the Olympics to the south. We hope to see wildflowers here and possibly
mountain goats. 10 miles RT, 400’ gain. A lower elevation options are also available and visitor’s center video. Goats, deer and a multitude of wildflowers should be visible.

Day 4, Wednesday July 1, 2010
Coastal Hiking (2.5 hr ride): Cape Flattery hike and Makah Indian Museum. Look for interesting critters in the intertidal zone if tide is out. Evening open or possible campfire at gazebo.

Day 5, Thursday July 2, 2010

Hurricane Hill, 400’ gain, and visitor’s center. Drive (1.5hr) up to Hurricane Ridge (~5000’) with its great open views of Mt. Olympus, at 7965’ highest in the Olympic Range and glaciers of the Olympics to the south. Hike up Hurricane Hill (5757’) for more view. Lower elevation options are also available and miscellaneous short hikes near the visitor center. Evening open to watch the sunset or hike to nearby Marymere Falls, 1.8 mi. RT

Day 6, Friday, July 3, 2010
Hoh Rainforest-(2 hr. ride) Hike the Hall of Mosses, Spruce Nature Trail and along the Hoh Valley to get the flavor of a coniferous temperate rain forest environment with its giant trees, huge ferns, abundant mosses and hanging lichens. Look for Roosevelt elk. 4-6 miles RT, little elevation changes. Farewell Dinner, trip reflections

Day 7, Saturday July 4, 2010
After breakfast take chartered shuttle back to SEATAC airport, 3.5 hr. Trail lunch will be provided for the trip. Plan flights after 2:00pm
