HIKING THE HIGHLANDS OF SCOTLAND - VILLAGE
TO VILLAGE
April 24 - May 3, 2009
$1550
Dick Ernenwein, Trip Leader

Our hiking
adventure will combine trekking the famous West Highland Way with
climbing to the peaks of three of Britain's highest and most splendid
mountains. You will hike the best selections of Scotland's most popular
long distance path and we will detour from the official trail to climb
to the three mountain peaks. In Scotland the higher mountains are
called Munros which are mountains over 3000 ft. There are 286 almost
all located in the Highlands of Scotland. We will encounter an
astonishing variety of scenery as we trek through the heart of the
Scottish Highlands including Loch Lomond, Glencoe and Ben Nevis,
Scotland's highest mountain. There are many good reasons why the West
Highland Way is Scotland's most popular long distance path. It is easy
to get to because the start and finish are both near rail stations. The
route passes many small towns and villages, so it is well served by
accommodations along its length; and on this hike, you will never be
far from places which are steeped in the history of Scotland, like the
old cattle drovers inns, the sites of battles with English troops, and
military roads built to suppress the Jacobites after the 1745 rebellion.
There will be three moderate hikes and three moderate to strenuous
hikes leaving a day in the middle for rest and/or two or three cultural
choices. There will be two guided hikes and four self-guided hikes led
by me. It is also possible to plan a hike on the “rest” day.
We will stay in three different hotels/B & B's all with twin rooms
and bathroom en-suite. On our moving days, our luggage will be
transferred to the next Inn.
The end of April and beginning of May is an excellent time to trek the
West Highland Way as May is traditionally the sunniest month and we
also avoid the midges which appear in late May. There still may be some
patches of snow at the higher mountain altitudes but that should not
present a problem.
