Daily Itinerary
Day 1, Sunday. July 7, 2008:
Arrive in Oslo; meet group at 5:00 p.m. Meet our Norwegian guide after
dinner.
Day 2, Monday, July 8, 2008:
From Oslo to Gjendeheim in the Jotenheimen National Park by bus and
then by boat to the other end of the 18 km. glacial Lake Gjende. Stay
at DNT hut Gjendebu.
Day 3, Tuesday, July 9,
2008: Hike 6-7 hrs. from Gjendebu to Memurubu lodge on
high route along the lake with spectacular 360 degree views of peaks
and glaciers.
Day 4, Wednesday, July 10, 2008:
Take Norway’s most popular hike from Memurubu to Gjendesheim using the
Besseggen ridge, a high narrow route made famous by author Henrik
Ibsen.in Peer Gynt. A 6-7 hr. hike. Those who don’t like the
narrow, high, edge portion of this trail can opt to take a boat instead.
Day 5, Thursday, July 11,
2008: Take early boat back to Gjendebu, then hike up the
river valley to DNT hut at Leirvassbu, a 6 hr hike. We may see reindeer
en route.
Day 6, Friday, July 12,
2008: Hike from Leirvassbu SW to Skogadalsbøen. 7
hr.
Day 7, Saturday. July 13,
2008: Hike from Skogadalsbøen to Hjelle, and
continue same day by van to Aurlandsdal’s Steinbergsdals hut. 7-8 hr
hike descending gradual valley. This is a very cozy hut with enough
antiques to make it feel like a museum.
Day 8, Sunday, July 14,
2008: Start down the famous Aurlandsdalen east-west valley trade
route, hiking from Steinbergsdalshytte to Østerbø. An
easy 4-5 hr hike.
Day 9, Monday, July 15,
2008: A 7 hr. hike along the last stretch of this valley,
from Østerbø toVassbygdi. Stunning views of gorges,
waterfalls and old summer farm buildings abandoned in the 19th c. Some
steep gravely pitches. Take bus to DNT’s Heimly Pensjionat. in
Flåm on the Aurlandsfjord.
Day 10, Tuesday, July 16,
2008: Breakfast at Pension. Tour Aurlandsdal fjord by
special ferry from Flåm to Gudvangen. Minivan to tiny village of
Undredal; tour and lunch provided. Van back to Flåm . Take train
to Oslo, arriving fairly late (10 p.m.?). Evening meal not covered,
since this will be eaten on the train.
Day 11, Wednesday, July
17, 2008: Final breakfast at the hotel. Departure for home.
Transportation and meals beyond breakfast today are not covered.
Hikers may arrange to stay longer at Hotel Spectrum at DNT rates if
prearranged early enough through me in connection with this hike.
