The Erie Canal State
Historic Park extends 36 miles from DeWitt (near Syracuse) to Rome, NY.
Along this section of the 1862 enlargement of the original canal, you
will find such remnants of the past as aqueducts, feeder canals,
bridges, culverts and dry docks.
We will hike on sections of the towpath every day, ending at a museum
or other place of interest.
We will see some of the original canal, a restored village, a
reconstructed fort and a battlefield.
We will visit the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, which is the only
surviving weigh lock building in the world. We will also visit the
museum that features the early salt industry and the living museum that
highlights the French and Native Americans.
We will reach the canal and other sites by a van provided by Cazenovia
College, which will also furnish us with dormitory rooms (6 nights),
and all meals. Cazenovia is an old, quaint village on a lake, about 20
miles southeast of Syracuse on Route 20.
Almost all of the hiking is level and easy and doesn’t exceed 5 miles
at one time. It will be moderately paced. However, sun should be
expected on some stretches of the towpath.
The deadline to register
is March 1, 2008,
however, a similar trip in 2007 filled quickly. To register, a deposit
of $250 is required by March 1
