punalu beachTRIP NOW FULL!  TO BE PUT ON A WAIT LIST, PLEASE CONTACT LEADER

Enjoy day hiking and camping on the Big Island of Hawaii with an experienced guide. We will focus on the tropical and marine habitats, flora, fauna and volcanic geology. We will hike in areas that few locals even know about including trails in Volcanoes National Park, famous volcanoes and lava flows, tropical rain forests and beaches where sea turtle and whale sightings are a possibility. Experience several of the Big Island's unique ecosystems, including a visit to the southern most city in the United States. Hawaiian culture and history will fascinate and delight you! Spend a few days camping on beaches at the northern tropical end of the island, hike the coast, and swim in clear, warm Pacific waters. We will be sleeping in tents at campgrounds in National Parks and beaches and day hiking. You just have to get yourself to Hilo, Hawaii, and let our outfitter do the rest. Many of the trails in the National Park are fairly flat and easy, with gentle ups and downs. Others are more rugged, but can be traversed with care. Trails may present obstacles like roots and rocks. Some sections may be moderately steep. Lava is brittle and sharp so sturdy shoes are important. The emphasis will be on relatively short day hikes, ranging from 1 to 10 miles in length. You will carry a small day pack with your lunch and other gear that you want access to during the day (like rain gear, binoculars, camera, sunscreen, etc.), and you will carry your own water. To protect the fragile ecosystem, WI uses minimum impact camping and travel techniques.

Temperatures in the interior range from 40 F at night to 85 F during the day. We will be camping at 4,000 ft and rain is common. Beach camping is usually hot (up to 60 F at night and up to 95 F during the day) and sunny. You will probably experience an entire range of weather during your trip including some rain.
