PEAKS OF THE PEMIGEWASST, NEW HAMPSHIRE
June 18-22, 2007
$515
John Pimental, Trip Leader

TRIP CANCELLED

Come spend four days hiking deep in the spectacular Pemigewasset Wilderness in the rugged White Mountains of NH (two nights at the Woodwards Resort in Lincoln, NH and three nights at remote AMC mountain huts surrounded by nature’s rugged beauty). Registration deadline is April 1, 2007.

Nary a road blemishes New Hampshire's largest Wilderness, a bastion of hardwoods further insulated by a series of raggedly beautiful peaks that extend beyond the tree line and drain into the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River. Pemigewasset means “swift current" in Abenaka If you make it past these welcome obstacles, prepare to enjoy New England backpacking at its best. Loggers removed almost the entire forest cover between 1890 and 1940, but 55 years of regeneration have eliminated virtually all signs of that era. The sharp, narrow Franconia Range and Twin Range form a horseshoe around the western portion of the area, with the Franconia threatening to challenge the Presidential Range for the title of Premier Peak. Mount Bond's crags and ledges demarcate the central northern boundary, and the Bondcliffs, just southwest of Mount Bond, quietly flaunt a vista across mountains and forests that show no trace of human interference. This is one of the few places in New Hampshire that can confess to boasting such a flawless view.

We will spend four days traversing these wild peaks and valleys visiting areas that most hikers do not get to see.

This is also a good opportunity to continue your time in the area and explore other parts of New England.

This trip is intended for very fit hikers with backcountry experience. Much of the hike will be above treeline, exposed to the notoriously unpredictable White Mountain weather. Hikes will be strenuous with a total of over 45 miles of hiking and over 15,000 feet of elevation gain over a four-day period.

Trip cost of $515 (double occupancy while at the Resort – single occupancy will be significantly more) is based on 6 participants plus leader. Included are 5 nights lodging (“standard” rooms), 3 nights at AMC huts in which breakfasts and dinners are included, and 2 nights at the Woodwards Resort. Trip participants are responsible for lunches and snacks during the hike and for meals when staying at the Woodwards Resort. Lincoln NH has many dining options available to suit almost any budget. Not included are airfare, beverages, personal items and other extras or special.

The group size is limited to 8 participants plus the leader.

DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION IS APRIL 1, 2007.
