I am looking for 10
to 13 strong, convivial hikers to join me for an incredible adventure
trekking across the Italian Dolomites. Guided by our wonderful
quintessential certified Austrian guide, Franz Larch, we will start our
trek south of Innsbruck, Austria near the Italian border and it will
end just north of Venice, Italy.
The trip begins in the Alpine “flower” town of Alpbach about 3 hours
south of Munich. We will rendezvous at an Alpbach hotel, The
Albacherhof, for introductions, instructions, orientation and questions
followed by dinner. This trip will be limited to 14 participants plus
our guide. This will be a strenuous 7 day trek, hiking 6 to 8 hours a
day (no days off) with daily ascents and descents of 1000-4700ft. After
catching up on some sleep, we begin the adventure at Schlegeis-Stausee
at the back end of the Zillertal Alps and proceed south over the
Northern Dolomites and then the Southern Dolomites ending at the
Italian town of Belluno. We will hike approximately 15 to 20 km (9-13
miles) a day on absolutely spectacular trails up through high passes to
over 10,000ft., across high alpine meadows carpeted with beautiful
flowers, thru or over awesome gorges, past many waterfalls, and will
always be surrounded by magnificent mountain vistas of the awesome
towers of the Dolomites.. We will sleep in 4 to 5 mountain huts with
breathtaking views. We will also spend 2 to 3 nights in
Gasthaus/hotel/Pension, breakfast included. The huts, where we will
also have our daily breakfasts and dinners, vary in their
accommodations; but are all warm, cozy and offer cold (some may also
have hot water) running water, indoor toilets and anywhere from 2 to 12
person rooms. You will only need to carry a sleeping bag, rain and wind
gear, extra clothes, and personal items (15-25lbs).
We end the hike at the fascinating Medieval small village of Allghe,
about a 45- minute bus ride from Venice. I expect many of us will want
to take the opportunity to visit this famous antiquity, considered by
many to be the most beautiful city in the world, before we depart for
America or other destinations.
The cost of $870.00 includes one night in an Alpbach hotel (dinner
& breakfast included), transport to the trail-head, 7 nights in the
huts/Inns with breakfasts, and the costs of our guide. Not included are
the dinners in the huts/Inns, lunches on the trail, bus transport and
mountain lifts. This trip filled fast with a large waiting list when it
last ran in 2005. I expect this trip to be closed by Christmas.
