   HIKING IN NOVA SCOTIA
SEPTEMBER 16-24, 2006
$1750
Deborah Scodese-French, Leader
Tentative Itinerary

This itinerary has flexibility built in to accommodate weather, group interests and to take advantage of some "spur of the moment" activities or events that arise.  We are in Celtic country and there may be some fiddling, time for tea with local people or impromptu dancing that occurs.  We would not want to miss that!

Day 1-Saturday, September 16, 2006

Arrive in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  I will pick people up at the airport as they arrive.  Depending on the time that people arrive we may have time to do a drive to Peggy's Cove for a walk through the tiny picturesque village and to the historic lighthouse.  We then can go out for pizza as an opening night "get to know you dinner" and do an evening waterfront walk.

Day 2-Sunday, September 17, 2006

Depart after Breakfast for Cape Breton Island.  This will be the longest drive we have all week.  It will take us about 6 hours.  It is a beautiful scenic drive with interesting stops and points of interest along the way.  We will stop at the Alexander Graham Bell Museum near Louisburg.  It is one of the most fascinating museums I have visited.  Spend night in Ingonish

Day 3-Monday, September 18, 2006

Day hike near Ingonish.  Spend the night in Ingonish.

Day 4-Tuesday, September 19, 2006

Day hike near Ingonish.  Spend the night in Ingonish.

Day 5-Wednesday, September 20, 2006

Drive to Cheticamp (a scenic 3 hour trip).  We will stop for 2 short day hikes and a cup of the finest clam chowder in Cape Breton in route to Cheticamp.  The hikes are short, but a nice way to introduce everyone to the very dramatic and different ecosystems, wildlife, and scenic beauty of Cape Breton Island.  We will stop at the park visitor center once we re-enter the park.  It is a beautiful interpretive center with many displays and a great bookstore.  Spend the night in Cheticamp. (Possible  whale watch depending on weather).

Day 6-Thursday, September 21, 2006

Day hike Cape Breton Highland National Park.  Spend night in Cheticamp.  (possible whale watch and Whale Interpretive Center depending on weather ).

Day 7-Friday, September 22, 2006

If weather did not permit it the last 2 days, we will try again for a whale watch in the morning before heading south, back towards Halifax.  Otherwise, we will day hike in the morning and head back to Halifax by late afternoon.  Spend the night in Halifax.

Day 8-Saturday, September 23, 2006

Spend the day touring Halifax and surrounding areas.  There is time for shopping, The Maritime museum, The Citadel, and some leisurely walking.  Perhaps, if interest, time, and weather permit, we can take an evening cruise on the historic Schooner around Halifax Harbor.  Spend the night in Halifax.

Day 9-Sunday, September 24, 2006

Depart for home.

Return to Outing Description.
