We will meet and depart from Halifax, Nova Scotia, spending our first and last 2 nights in this quaint maritime city. From here we will depart for Cape Breton Highlands National Park, the first national park in the Maritimes which encompasses 950 square kilometers. There are more trails throughout the park than we can hike in a week's time, but we surely will try. Next it's north, up the eastern shore on the Cabot Trail, one of the most scenic and awesome drives there is. Off to one side, the view offers lush green, mountainous landscape to gaze upon, and to the other, vast blue ocean. Be prepared for many stops along the way for photo opportunities of quaint fishing villages, lighthouses, wildlife and scenery. Ingonish is our destination for a 3-night stay. Here, we have three days of hiking and exploring. September is a great month to hike in Nova Scotia; most of the tourists have gone south, and the leaves will just have a hint of change. There are numerous hikes in the park as well as nearby Cape Smokey. Then we continue north around Cape Breton to Cheticamp making scenic stops and doing a little hiking along the way. Cheticamp is the gateway to great hiking in Cape Breton and also offers some of the finest whale watching tours in the country. We will do it all--well lots of it anyway. There is also great food, artistry and shopping in Pleasant Bay. We will spend two nights here. Then it is time to head back to Halifax to take in the sights of this unique port city.
