Tentative Itinerary
Back country permits are required to access the regions we will visit in Grand Canyon National Park. Your leader will obtain the group permits when they become available. Grandview, Cottonwood Creek, Grapevine and Hance Creek is our preferred route and area. Day 1-Saturday, September 23, 2006 Arrive in Phoenix. Rendezvous at hotel in time for dinner. Day 2-Sunday, September 24, 2006 Drive 4 hours to Grand Canyon, passing through saguaro cactus area on the way. Begin hike down to Cottonwood Creek. This spectacular route takes us away from the busiest areas. We pass the mining areas at Horseshoe Mesa and continue on down to the oasis at Cottonwood. Distance is 5 miles, mostly downhill. Day 3-Monday, September 25, 2006 Hike 5 miles around to Grapevine on the Tonto Trail which is a fairly level trail. Grapevine is an amazing sandstone slot canyon just below where we intersect it. It has some beautiful pour overs and the dayhike down the canyon rivals any in the Grand Canyon. Day 4-Tuesday, September 26, 2006 Day hike Grapevine. Great hidden springs and pools on the way down. This is a seldom hiked area, so we don't expect to see anyone else. Day 5-Wednesday, September 27, 2006 Hike back to Cottonwood Creek. If you want to descend to the river, we can day hike it on the way back. There is a very steep trail to the inner gorge. It is a beautiful route. Day 6-Thursday, September 28, 2006 Hike around to Hance Canyon. It is an easy, 5 mile, trail. Fades into nothing at one point. Tonto Plateau. Hance is great for exploring and has some nice water. Day 7-Friday, September 29, 2006 Hike to Horseshoe Mesa. Explore mines on route. Cave exploring at the end of the day. Day 8-Saturday, September 30, 2006 Hike out by noon. Drive back to Phoenix for the night. Celebrate in town. Stay in a hotel. Day 9-Sunday, October 1, 2006 Depart from Phoenix in the morning. Flights can be made early if you like.
