   BAJA SEA KAYAKING - MEXICO
APRIL 15-23, 2006
$1299
 Randy French, Leader
bajaExplore the Sea of Cortez by sea kayaking and snorkeling and the Baja by hiking.  Here the desert of Cordons, with the largest cactus in the world (over 20 feet tall), meets the Sea of Cortez.  It is a dry land of spectacular desert mountains dropping to the edge of turquoise seas.  Between sheer cliffs, sandy beaches meet the sparkling water.  Many sea birds, including terns, pelicans, osprey, heron and the unique blue footed booby, with its iridescent blue feet, make their homes on the islands and cliffs.  Large marine animals like sea lions, dolphins and whales also call it home.  And under the waters' surface is a colorful world of fish, sponges and coral.  People too have lived here before the Spanish arrived in the 1500s.

The Baja is the ideal location for sea kayaking.  You can paddle the shoreline, exploring the cliffs and coves as you go.  Once you cross to the other side of the bay you'll feel like you are the only kayakers in the world (at least the Baja world).  Your sea kayak will float over a myriad of colors and sea life visible as you paddle.  Don a mask and snorkel and go over board.  You are now in a beautiful foreign world of angelfish, parrot fish, corals, sponges and more.  Whales cruise the outside waters after birthing their young.  Porpoises frolic in the early morning light.  Hiking in the hills is a unique experience under blue skies.

At this time of year, days are warm, in the 80's, and nights are cool, in the upper 50's.  The water is about 70-72 degrees.

This trip is for the active adventurer with paddling for all levels of paddlers.  Instruction will be provided for those who need it.  There will be both single and double kayaks available and we may switch people from one to another to faciliate group progress.  We will rise early, perhaps before sun-up, to get in 4 hours of paddling before the wind comes up.  We'll stop for an early breakfast on route.  The rest of the day we'll explore the land or the water near our campsite.  We'll snorkel, hike, lay in the sun and walk the beaches.  Hiking and snorkeling are optional, but will add greatly to your enjoyment of the trip.  Walking lets you see the desert geology, flora and fauna up close while snorkeling introduces you to the magical hidden world beneath the sea.  Except for 2 nights in a hotel, we will be camping on the beaches.  Most meals will be at our campsites or along the way on our daily travels, but there will also be restaurant meals to introduce you to Mexican atmosphere and cuisine. (Tentative Itinerary)

This trip not only takes you to some of the most beautiful areas of Baja, but you'll end the trip at Mulege, a great oasis town.  Here you will enjoy exploring one of the oldest towns in Baja, have dinner and spend a welcome night at a hotel.
