Tentative ItineraryDay 1-Saturday, February 18, 2006: Mt. Meru, Outpost B&B Meet at the Outpost Bed and Breakfast, Arusha, Tanzania. We will spend the day hiking and visiting a community based project on the slopes of Mt. Meru, in Arusha. We will return to the Outpost Bed and Breakfast for the evening. Lunch this day is included and all meals hereafter. Day 2-Sunday, February 19, 2006: Lake Manyara National Park, Private Camp Dorobo Safari will meet participants at the Outpost Bed and Breakfast at 8 am. We will travel west to Lake Manyara National Park, which provides excellent game watching including tree-climbing lions, baboons and elephant and is known for water birds and African flamingos. If time permits we will visit the bustling market town of Mto-wa-Mbu. We will then drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation area and to our private camp in the Ngorongoro Crater area. Day 3-Monday, February 20, 2006: Ngorongoro Crater, Private Camp Day for game driving in the crater. We will spend the day in the Ngorongoro Crater, which is one of the largest unbroken craters on earth and claims the highest density of wildlife on the African continent. The view from the crater rim is breathtaking--a landscape like no other. Simply put, it is awesome. We will spend most of the day exploring the crater observing the diverse array of wildlife. The Park has been considering limiting time in the crater to half day. If this happens, we will spend a morning in the crater and the afternoon hiking. We will spend this night at the same private camp in the Ngorongoro Crater area. Day 4-Tuesday, February 21, 2006: Empakai Crater, Private Camp Drive up towards Empakai Crater and spend the day hiking up to the rim of the crater. This will be a great opportunity to get to know the crater highland area on foot and explore one of the craters up close. The evening will be spent at the private camp in the Ngorongoro Crater area. Day 5-Wednesday, February 22, 2006: Olduvai Gorge & Lake Ndutu, Ndutu Safari Lodge Drive through Ngorongoro on our way towards the Serengeti ecosystem. We will travel northwest to Olduvai Gorge through land inhabited by the Maasai people. Olduvai Gorge is part of the Leakey's famed archaeological discovery of the hominid that dates back 1.8 million years. Dig sites are still active for a good portion of the year and we will visit the interpretive museum. Following the visit at Olduvai, we will travel west towards the Serengeti to the Ndutu Safari Lodge, located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area on the southeastern edge of Serengeti National Park next to Ndutu Lake. We will spend the night at the Ndutu Safari Lodge, a beautiful lodge nestled in acacia trees next to Ndutu Lake. ![]() Day 6-Thursday, February 23, 2006: Ndutu & Ndutu Safari Lodge We will spend the day exploring the area around Ndutu observing wildlife on game drives, walking, and soaking in its magnificence. We will spend this night again at the Ndutu Safari Lodge. Day 7 & 8-Friday and Saturday, February 24-25, 2006: Soit Orgoss Wilderness Area Travel up to our private camp in the Soit Orgoss Wilderness area, located on the northeastern edge of the Serengeti, along the Grumeti River. This is a long, scenic drive. This is land that Dorobo has leased from the Maasai tribe. The views of the Serengeti from this camp site are tremendous. We will hike in this area, explore by land rover, spend time with Maasai people, and learn about their cultures and their co-existence with the animals of the ecosystem. We will camp for two nights at the Soit Orgoss camp area. Day 9-Sunday, February 26, 2006: Serengeti National Park, Serengeti Wildlife lodge Drive down to the Seronera area in central Serengeti National Park. We will wake up at camp, spend the day on safari traveling southeast, viewing the interior of the Park and arrive in the central part of the Serengeti to spend our final night at the Serengeti Wildlife lodge. Day 10-Monday, February 27, 2006: Serengeti National Park, Arusha We have arrangements for a commercial flight from the Lodge to return us to Arusha Airport, the final trip destination. The short flight should prove to be a fantastic overview of the Park from the small airplane with possible views of Mt. Meru, Ngorongoro Crater and Kilimanjaro. Participants planning to leave this night can arrange for a day room at the Outpost B&B or KIA hotel. There are markets that are fun to visit in Arusha where people can look at crafts and purchase gifts if desired. OPTIONAL: Day 11-Tuesday, February 28, 2006 For an additional $50, participants can spend the day biking with Dorobo Safari through villages, coffee plantations, Massai Lands. Biking is on dirt paths, old, bumpy paved roads, and trails. Bike ride with picnic lunch out of Arusha. Lunch is included in the day trip. Participants will be responsible for the night stay the night before the bike ride. Return to Outing Description. |
