 Real adventure
awaits you in the Otztal Mountains, the highest mountain range in
Austria. Join your fellow ADKers on our trek to the spot where “Otzi”
was found.On September 19, 1991, a German hiker spotted a 5300 year old stone age man frozen in time and now known as the “Iceman”. Austrians call him “Otzi” after the Otztal Mountains where this Neolithic man was found remarkably preserved in the melting Similaun Glacier. We will take you on an approximately 6- 7 hour hike climbing 3700ft. to the Similaun Hut perched at 3019 meters or 10,000ft. where we will spend the night. The next day, we will hike the high ridge reaching 10,700ft. to the spot where “Otzi” was found and then trek approximately 5-6 hours back to Solden. In addition to this 2 day trek there will be 5 other moderate to strenuous hikes. This trip is based at the Hotel Solderhof (4-star-1st class) in Solden, Austria. Solden is located at 4500ft. far up the Otztal with blooming Alpine flowers and grazing herds next to glaciers bristling in ice and thundering mountain streams. Solden has developed into an international renowned sports and training center (sounds like Lake Placid) for hiking, mountain climbing, mountain biking, white water, and 365 day skiing on the Rettenbach and Tiefenbach Glaciers. Everything is dominated by Tyrol’s highest peak, the 12,500ft. high Wildspitze. The level of hiking difficulty will range from moderate to strenuous. Based on the ADK hiking system, there will probably be 3 “A” strenuous hike (6-7 hours & 3700ft. vertical) ; 2 “B+” moderate/ strenuous hikes (up to 5- 7 hours & 2000- 3000ft.verticals) and 2 “B” moderate level hikes of 4-6 hours and up to 2000ft.verticals. Participants should be in excellent physical condition with some strenuous hiking accomplished during the previous 12 months. There will be 4 days of guided hikes as defined in the itinerary and 3 days of optional hikes guided by Florian, the hotel guide and/or by myself. One of the guided hikes includes a guided hiking tour of the Rettenbach Glacier with guides from Solden (all necessary climbing/hiking equipment including ropes & crampons provided & included in price). Also Included are 8 nights lodging in double rooms, 8 breakfasts & dinners. Don’t miss this one.
