While
the Colorado River and it's largest tributary the Green River, are
justly renowned for their challenging and dangerous rapids, a lesser
known stretch of the Green River in southeast Utah can be paddled in
open canoes by paddlers of modest skills and experience. This stretch
of 120 miles includes both Stillwater and Labyrinth canyons whose
depths reach 1500 feet where the Green River joins the Colorado. There
are no rapids or portages. Along the way we will be immersed in
beautiful wild side canyons, hike to ancient petroglyph sites and
Anasazi ruins, explore old uranium mines, hike to spectacular overview
points, and experience the unique solitude of desert camping. This trip is intended for those who are comfortable with unsupported wilderness camping including planning, packing, and cooking their own food in teams of two. Canoeing skills should include experience with moving water (class 1+ rapids), but high level white water skills are not necessary. Hikes may be up to a few miles in hot, dry environments on very rough trails or cross-country routes. Our emphasis will be on experiencing the stunning beauty of the canyons and desert and not on making high numbers of miles per day on the river. Plenty of time will be available for hiking, photography, birding, exploring, and soaking up the unique ambience of the canyons. After the river portion of the trip, we will have two days to vehicle tour Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and Dead Horse Canyon State Park--all spectacular. Price of $1410 ($75 nonrefundable) includes: Canoe and equipment rental, two nights in a motel in Salt Lake City, Utah and 4 nights in Moab, Utah, fees, gratuities and a farewell dinner. Not included: Transportation between home and Salt Lake City, Utah, food, camping and cooking equipment, fuel and water containers. $75 ($75 nonrefundable) deposit by November 1, 2005 required to register. Payment of $350 due December 31, 2005. Final payment, $985, due February 1, 2006. All payments nonrefundable after March 17, 2006 unless spot can be filled. Trip is limited to nine participants.
