   KILIMANJARO CLIMB
FEBRUARY 11 - 21, 2005
$1850
Scott Smalley & Kathleen Fitzgerald, Leaders
Crowned by eternal snows, the massive Kilimanjaro (19,340ft) is the highest freestanding mountain in the world and dominates its landscape unlike any other mountain. Located in Tanzania, East Africa, this extinct volcano looms over vast plains and large game reserves and is certainly one of the world's most impressive sights. The terrain is nothing short of dramatic, ranging from low elevation rain forest to high alpine glaciers near the summit.

The ascent up this great peak is a non-technical hike by nature and it affords a full mountaineering experience for those in strong physical condition. A climb up Kilimanjaro followed by a safari expedition is one of the most treasured and unforgettable adventures one can imagine, see ADK Safari/Cultural Exploration Trip, which immediately follows the Kilimanjaro climb.

Kilimanjaro is composed of three extinct volcanoes: Kibo (5895m), Mawenzi (5149m) and Shira (3962m). Its last major eruption was 360,000 years ago.  Many believe the name of the mountain is derived from the Kishwahili tribal name, Kilima meaning mountain. The mountain was first climbed by Hans Meyer in 1889.

We will spend eight days on the mountain, led by a well-established and experienced guide service, climbing by way of the Shira route. The Shira route is an incredible scenic trail on the remote southwest flank of the mountain that provides maximum altitude acclimatization and avoids the over-traveled tourist routes. This route will take climbers through Kili's five ecological zones with adequate time to adjust to the altitude as we slowly make our way to the summit. The night before our summit bid, we will camp at 18,500 ft., then carry all of our gear to the summit and begin the descent via the Mweka route, a trail traveling down the south side of the mountain.

If you are one of those people who have said, "I've always wanted to climb Kilimanjaro," now is your chance!

Participants may want to consider completing their African experience by signing up for the ADK Serengeti Safari and Cultural Exploration trip, which immediately follows the Kilimanjaro climb, see ADK Adventure Travel.
