![]() Scotland!!! The very name of this land brings to mind a flood of associations-from the poetry of Robert Burns, to the melodious tunes of Annie Laurie and Loch Lomond, to tartans, plaids, kilts, and bagpipes, ancient and bitter clan feuds, a fierce struggle for independence, and a continuing self-sufficient pride. Ancient castles, small villages and beautiful mountains all combine to make this a wonderful destination. But did you know that the hiking in Scotland is some of the best in the world? Rocky peaks, barren of trees, but blooming with spring flowers, rise from the lochs below. The trails have been here for centuries, in the past leading between the beloved territories of clan chiefs and small kingdoms. You will walk in the shadow of the ancient castles and retire in small villages still echoing faintly with voices from the past. Hike peaks and ridges such as the peak of the Cobbler in the Arrochar Alps, Slioch, and Beinn Eigghe. You'll have a chance to hike Glen Nevis, made famous in the movies Rob Roy and Braveheart. Tour Glen Coe, site of the tragic McDonald and Campbell massacre, and then be refreshed with its natural beauty as you watch for the golden eagles, wildcats, red deer and ptarmigan resident in Glen Coe. We can stop at the pub for Scottish music and to meet local people. On our travels, we will pass Inverness, a hustling, bustling city, and then move on to Loch Ness. We'll see the Loch Ness exhibit center and perhaps you'll even catch a glimpse of "Nessie!' Many people think of Scotland as "the Highlands," but don't forget, it is also on an island, surrounded by smaller isles, and the sea has always played a vital role in Scotland's history. We will ferry over to The Isle of Arran, to spend the night and to hike on Goat Fell, enjoying a view of the Scottish mainland. Possible side trips include the Ossian Caves, Glen Rosa, or Broderick Castle and grounds. The early departure dates guarantee a great price and a low-key tourist season. Appropriate for active hikers. Price of $1899 ($300 nonrefundable) includes: Guides, lodging, most meals, local transport. Not included: Airfare (estimated cost, currently: $600-$700 roundtrip, Rochester, NY to Glasgow, Scotland). $300 nonrefundable deposit needed to register.
