   HIKING IN THE COLORADO ROCKIES
JULY 23 - 31, 2005
$800
Dick Ernenwein, Leader

Settled in the 1870's by miners and at nearly 9000 ft in the central Colorado Rockies, Crested Butte is the quintessential romantic western mountain mining town. Crested Butte is surrounded by over three million acres of wilderness and National Forest with spectacular scenery beyond compare.

This will be an advanced intermediate to strenuous hiking trip (in terms of elevation climbed each day; although the trail footing is very easy as compared to the Adirondacks) with six hikes ranging from 3  to 13 miles and elevations from 1000 ft. to 3100 ft.(most days will be 2000 ft plus) reaching heights of up to 13,000 ft. This trip is also deliberately timed to take advantage of one of Crested Butte's most famous events; namely, the Wild Flower Festival.. Crested Butte is famous as the Wild Flower capitol of  the Rockies and the flowers should be at their peak during this week. We will be hiking up high valleys and alpine meadows carpeted with a rainbow of colors.

High altitude hiking means that it is important to acclimate as much as possible. So each day will be a little more strenuous with a day off after the 3rd day to rest or partake in an alternate activity including horseback riding, biking, rafting, fishing, or more hiking. Due to almost daily late afternoon thunder & lightening storms, our hikes will start and end early (estimated 8:30am - 3:30pm ). This will allow a couple of hours each afternoon for individual pursuits including just taking it easy with a nice cold beer, shopping, or a leisurely walk enjoying the town.

All 8 nights will be spent at the Christiana Guesthaus, a European style inn, located near the center of Crested Butte and hosted by the devoted and very helpful British couple Martin and Rosy Catmur. It includes cozy double rooms with bath and a gourmet breakfast which includes homemade granola, fresh fruit, and various muffins.  Each participant will be responsible for buying their own daily trail lunch and each night we will take in a different restaurant in Crested Butte.  They have a wonderful variety of excellent restaurants ranging from Mexican to French to family western theme dinner. The dinners will also be the responsibility of each participant.

Price of $800 ($75 nonrefundable) includes: Transport from Denver Airport to Crested Butte and back in a 12 passenger van, 8 nights double room, 8 breakfasts and chair lift ride up Crested Butte Mountain. Not included: Airfare, lunches and dinners.  Trip is limited to 12 participants including the leader.
