   OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK - HIKING & NATURE STUDY II

Tentative Itinerary:
Weather and snow pack may affect trail conditions especially at higher elevations.
Daily Plan: 7:15 breakfast, 8:30 hikes depart, 4-5:00 return to OPI, 6:00 dinner,
7:30-8:30 evening program(S, M, T)

  • Sunday 6/26    Arrive before 2:00pm at SeaTac Airport, Seattle, WA. Meet group and take chartered shuttle to Olympic Peninsula Institute (OPI). Dinner and orientation.
  • Monday 6/27    Sol Duc Valley- Hike up to Mink Lake and the Seven Lakes Basin region/meadows via Sol Duc Hot Springs, lunch in meadows near a small tarn (glacial lake) with views of Mink Lake Valley below. Observe alpine wildflowers. Option later to visit Sol Duc Falls if time and energy allow,  5-7.4 miles RT, gain 1460’n
  • Evening  program
  • Tuesday 6/28  Hurricane Ridge to Elwha Valley-  Drive up to the ridge (~5000’) with its great open views of Mt. Olympus, at 7965’ highest in the Olympic Range, and Vancouver Island across the Strait of San Juan de Fuca to the north. There are many alpine wildflowers here.  Hike up Hurricane Hill (5757’) for more views then to Elwha Ranger Station losing 4,600’. 7-8 miles total mostly downhill.
  • Evening  program
  • Wednesday 6/29- Weather and snow melt permitting- Hike to the saddle of Mount Angeles (6000’) for rewarding views of The Straits of San Juan de Fuca, Vancouver Island and Mt Baker to the north and glaciers of the Olympics to the south. We hope to see wildflowers here and possibly mountain goats. 10 miles RT, 400’ gain. Lower elevation options are also available.
  • Evening open to canoe, watch the sunset or hike to nearby Marymere Falls, 1.8 mi. RT
  • Thursday 6/30 One of there two options:
    • Hoh Rainforest-  Hike the Hall of Mosses, Spruce Nature Trail and along the Hoh Valley to get the flavor of a coniferous temperate rain forest environment with its giant trees, huge ferns  abundant mosses and hanging lichens. 4-6 miles RT, little elevation change.
    • Obstruction Point – Return to Hurricane Ridge and hike a ridge, possibly across snowfields, from Obstruction Point to Deer Park. Outstanding views, above timberline, alpine wildflowers abound.  7miles RT, 1500’elevation change.
  • Evening  open or possible campfire
  • Friday    7/1 Coastal Options:
    • Cape Flattery hike and Makah (Indian) museum
    • Dungeness Spit hike
  • Farewell Dinner
  • Saturday 7/2 After early  breakfast take 7:30 AM chartered shuttle back to SEATAC airport, 3.5-4 hr.. Trail lunch will be provided for the trip. Plan flights after 1:00pm
