ItineraryPlease Note: Times and/or order of activities may be subject to slight changes depending on the opportunities provided by the natural world, weather, trail conditions and/or unforeseen circumstances. Day 1: May 11, 2005 Arrive at the Cortez Colorado airport by 2pm and travel to Eastland, Utah where we will stay at the FCS Basecamp (1 hour drive) and have dinner plus an orientation. Day 2 & 3: May 12-13 After a warm breakfast we will travel by vans over the scenic Abajo Mountain loop road to the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. While in the park we will view the dominant rock pinnacles banned in red and white that give the area its name and hike in the startling landscape of sculptured rock spires, arches, canyons, grabens, and potholes (up to 6 miles round-trip each day). The days will be enhanced with visits to some seldom seen petroglyph sites, ruins, or a scenic overlooks. After our hikes we will set up camp in the park. In the evenings we will invite local speakers to share their knowledge about the surrounding red rock canyons and mountains. Day 4: May 14 One of these two options depending on weather and snow at higher elevations 1. We will spend the day in the Abajo Mountains hiking to the top of a 11,000 foot peak. From the top of the Abajos you can get views of Colorado Green Rivers Confluence, Needles, Shiprock, Monument Valley, and Henry Mountains. 2. We will travel south into the Cedar Mesa area of southeastern Utah where we will give our legs a rest and visit the spectacular Muley Point and Goosenecks overlooks. We will also go for a short hike in Butler Wash to see rock art sites and stop at the Edge of the Cedars Museum in Blanding, UT. We will stop for a sack lunch while on the trail and return from our adventure in time to enjoy dinner and evening at the FCS Basecamp. Day 5: May 15 After and early breakfast we will return to Cortez, CO and spent the day exploring Mesa Verde National Park. We will stay at a hotel in Cortez and enjoy a celebratory farewell dinner.
