GATES OF THE ARCTIC - CANOEING THE NIGU RIVER
August 7 - 19, 2004
$2999
Randy French, Leader

This is the ultimate in remote Arctic exploration.  We have been waiting 10 years to go back to the Nigu River and the time is now right.  If you want solitude, a taste of real untrampled wilderness where caribou, wolves, moose and grizzly roam then you have been waiting for this too.  Put your finger on the globe and follow the spine of the Rocky Mountains until you get to the top of the globe where this chain finishes in the spectacular and austere Brooks Range.  Here, spilling from small pristine mountain lakes the Nigu and Killick Rivers run north to the sloping plain that ends in the Arctic ocean.  This is one trip where you will not need a flashlight, it doesn't get dark. The colors of sunset will blend into streaks of sunrise and a new day's adventure starts. We will meet in Fairbanks Alaska and fly as a group to Bettles. This unique town located north of the Arctic Circle is the jumping off point for our floatplanes to take us across the Brooks Range.  The flight into and out of the river are unparalleled trips of awesome beauty.  When people ask us where is the most spectacular place you have traveled in the world, this is it.  We were pioneers in running this trip, the local pilots have a lake that we use named after us. This trip is not for everyone, it is exciting and fun.  We will be paddling inflatable canoes on clear, cold class 1-2 rivers through pure wilderness. Instruction will be provided in paddling and all wilderness skills.   Cell phones will not work here, there is no television and there are no roads in the 800 mile long Gates of the Arctic Park.  We will be taking time to hike in the treeless tundra and learn what tussocks are.  The trails we will follow are made by animals, not people.  Yet in spite of the demanding environment we will come upon ancient archeological sites causing us to marvel at how people could exist in the area thousands of years ago.  If you come on this trip, you will need to be ready for adventure.  This is true wilderness and adventure will be had.  It can snow, we may have to move camp at weird hours to avoid bears and we will fish for arctic grayling and char. Start planning now for the adventure of a lifetime, call for an information package.  You need to talk to us if you intend to register to be sure that this is the right adventure for you.  Contact Randy French, PO Box 82, South Lima, NY 14558.  E-mail info@PackPaddleSki.com for more information.
