Experience
the joy of winter with our canine friends. We'll start with an
in-depth
investigation of wolves hosted by guides from the International Wolf
Center
(www.wolf.org). One highlight will be
a flight over the Superior National Forest to track
radio-collared
wild wolves. We'll then be the guests of famed polar explorer
Paul
Schurke and his staff at Wintergreen Dogsledding Lodge (www.dogsledding.com).
Participants will have an opportunity to mush their own team of
friendly,
beautiful Canadian Inuit sled dogs for three full days. (Photos

Lodge.)
As part of our adventure, we'll discuss the wilderness ecology and related environmental issues. Photographers will find much to fill their lenses. There will also be optional opportunities for XC skiing and snowshoeing for those with extra energy to burn.
Each evening we'll stay at a comfortable lodge and enjoy delicious meals along with the comradery of friends. For more hardy souls, there will be an option to camp under the stars one night.
The region we'll explore is centered on Ely, Minnesota -- the "Sled Dog Capitol" of the continental US. It's been the base for numerous major arctic expeditions. The area is home of the lower 48's most substantial population of gray wolves (the Minnesota wolf population is 2,600 -- nearly ten times larger than any other state except Alaska). Also residing nearby are thriving numbers of other northwoods animals including bald eagles, ravens, moose, and bear.
This trip is suitable for any ADK member in good health and requires no experience or special gear. Similar trips have been enjoyed by folk ages 8-80. Many have had no prior winter experience -- some have never even seen snow! You don't have to be an athlete. Dogsledding can be compared to bicycling -- it requires a bit of balance and some effort on the uphills but most of the time you're gliding along silently and effortlessly in the beautiful winter woods.
Trip price of $1370 ($100 non-refundable) includes: local and airport shuttle transportation, six nights lodging, all meals (except Sun. lunch), tracking flight over Superior National Forest, dog teams, all equipment, and guides.
What's not included: Transportation to Duluth, MN, one lunch, and personal clothing. (Those who do not own winter boots and outerwear can rent them for reasonable rates.)
